Julien Langevin began their coffee journey as a barista. In April of 2022, working as a roastery production assistant after a two-year hiatus from coffee, Julien won the United States Cup Tasters Competition. Cup Tasters is a national coffee tasting competition that challenges coffee professionals to identify differences in various flights of coffees. Julien trained themself for the competition, focusing on comparative tasting (tasting different yet very similar coffees next to one another).
Julien represented the United States in Milan, Italy at the World Coffee Competitions in June 2022. To prepare Julien focused on comparative tasting again, tasting over 800 sets of coffees over two months. Ultimately, competition served as a vehicle for Julien to discover key elements that are useful when developing one’s coffee palette.
Tomato Coffee Class started after Julien competed and won as an idea to share information about coffee tasting in an accessible and non-stressful way. Beginning with teaching Community Cupping classes and sharing knowledge on Instagram, Tomato has grown into a consulting business with a wide spectrum of services, all built upon the idea that coffee information should be accessible, and that coffee tasting is for everyone.
